Gorging on Movies

Slide through the movie doldrums

Looking for something to slide through the movie doldrums? Try some “Butter”

Last time I wrote here, I despaired the movie doldrums that had me wandering into an ill-advised showing of “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.” Well, I learned my lesson and decided my next movie outing would be in the comfort of my own easy chair for a meander through my Netflix account.

I’ve seen my fill of action movies lately, so I was looking for something different — comedy, maybe, or a nice costume drama. Well, I opted for the first.

I had been browsing past “Butter” for weeks wondering why anyone would make a film about butter. I couldn’t imagine it being anything worth watching. But it had actors I know and like: Jennifer Garner, Ty Burrell (“Modern Family”), Rob Corddry (“The Daily Show”), Hugh Jackman, Alicia Silverstone and Olivia Wilde (“House”). With that cast and that name, it had to be offbeat. But I wasn’t looking for offbeat for offbeat’s sake. I wanted entertainment and I found it in “Butter.”

Ty Burrell’s character is the “butter whisperer” of the film. The 15-time Iowa State Mastery in Butter champion who is asked to retire and give others a chance. Jennifer Garner is his tightly wound, politically ambitious wife, who hopes to ride his slippery coattails to the governor’s mansion. Young Yara Shahidi plays the talented young orphan and successor to the buttery throne.

It’s a satirical look at social and political climbing sautéed together with hundreds of pounds of sculpted butter.

It’s also laugh-out-loud funny and easy enough to follow that I watched it in several installments on the treadmill and found plenty of incentive knowing that my next sweatfest would be accompanied by solid entertainment.

Put your feet up. Pop some popcorn and don’t forget the “Butter.”

Note: Despite it's mundane title, "Butter" has a number of adult elements including sex and strong language, so this is a better choice for after the little ones have been tucked in for the night.
