A man from The Dalles was arrested early Monday morning for allegedly stabbing his roommate following a verbal dispute that turned into a physical altercation.
Scott Olenick, 26, was taken into custody shortly after 1 a.m. April 29 and lodged in the regional jail on the charge of first-degree assault.
He has been accused by authorities of stabbing Joshua Davitt, 23, of The Dalles in the chest with a knife.
Chief Jay Waterbury said law enforcement officials converged on the scene at 10th and Dry Hollow after a passing motorist reported to the emergency dispatch center that there was a “man down” on the sidewalk.
Police officers arrived to find Davitt unresponsive and having difficulty breathing. Medics from Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue transported him to Mid-Columbia Medical Center, where he was stabilized enough to be Lifeflighted to Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.
An OHSU spokesperson said Tuesday morning that Davitt remained in critical condition.
According to reports, Olenick and Davitt shared an apartment not far from the intersection and the stabbing took place in that location. Davitt left the dwelling before collapsing next to the roadway due to traumatic internal injuries.
Wasco County District Attorney Eric Nisley said Olenick was cooperative with police during the investigation and did not resist arrest.
Assisting police with the case were deputies from the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police.
Nisley said alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the incident.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Jamie Carrico at 541-296-2613.
